What is Meditation?
Meditation is acknowledged as a central element of Eastern religions, where it has been practiced for over 5,000 years. It is simply learning to live in the moment, when nothing distracts you and when you are not tied to the past or anxious about the future. Meditation is the way to bring us back to ourselves, where we can really experience and taste our full being, beyond all habitual patterns. It is a three step process that leads to a state of consciousness that brings serenity, clarity, and bliss. Meditation is more about being than doing, introducing and unveiling a new way of seeing, far beyond sitting or just keeping still. Meditation is a person's own journey to his inner self and is a process to know who we really are. It is a means of transforming the mind.
Meditation is not a technique but a way of life and is sometimes quite misunderstood and does not usually fit the bill as sometimes people perceive it to be. Meditation is actually becoming a practice that is quite popular in the Western world among people from all walks of life. It is a practice that brings about not only physical benefits, but psychological benefits as well. It is an approach that anyone can use to help them cope with medical problems, stress, and anxiety by way of thought, contemplation, and reflection. Meditation is one of the few things in the self-help arena you can do that produces measurable changes and is something the body knows how to do, and does willingly if you set up the conditions and allow it.
The application of mantras during meditation is called Mantra Yoga, Mantra Meditation or, since it leads beyond, Transcendental Meditation. This is a simple mental technique which allows the mind to gradually experience subtler and subtler states of thought, until the mind transcends even the subtlest state of thought, and experiences absolute silence, BLISS CONSCIOUSNESS. Meditation is generally a private, quiet practice and is a part of a process, a goal without an end. It is a simple way to balance a person's physical, mental and emotional states.
It is common for people to listen to relaxing meditation music or soundscapes whilst meditating. This helps quiet the mind and aids you in reaching a deeper meditative state.
